Blog 002. Studying bees and ants to think about peace of mind.

Safety is mainly about protecting the body and ”Anshin” is about keeping the mind and spirit at peace. There is no suitable word for the Japanese word Anshin overseas. “Anshin seems to be more closely related to Peace of mind, not Security.” The construction of a safe society that we envision must also consider the global environment in which people live. There are many different forms of life on Earth, and the global environment is made up of a food chain that includes fungi, bacteria, plants, insects, and animals. The ape-men, the ancestors of our species, were born 3 million years ago. Bees and ants were born long before humans. Bees were born 150 to 200 million years ago, and ants 150 million years ago. Therefore, we will study the behavior and senses of bees and ants, who were born before humans. Bees and ants are highly social creatures that live in groups. Ants are classified as the same Hymenoptera, Formicidae family. Ants and bees seem to have different means of communication, cultures, and lifestyles. However, there are very similarities in the behavior patterns that arise independently when living in groups. Both species have large antennae on their heads. Bees also have five eyes (three of which are located on the top of their heads and help them determine the direction of the sun), hearing (which detects vibrations), taste and smell, as well as sensory organs that detect electrical and magnetic fields.

Bees and ants cannot see red light and can instead capture ultraviolet light, which is very different from how humans see things. It is said that they can only see things close up. Rather than using their eyes to see the details, they use blurred images to suppress the outline of the object and grasp it in general, and the blurred image is thought to reduce the load on the brain. It is thought that they process things efficiently with fewer neurons in the brain than humans. Bees and ants have large antennae and excellent senses of smell (which are thought to communicate through chemicals secreted) and are thought to have specialized sensory organs to find sources of nutrition in order to survive. Bees and ants sense things differently from humans. This can be said to be a biological strategy that prioritizes survival. The behavior of bees and ants is based on years of experience and the accumulation of wisdom (stored in their DNA) that allows them to survive. We believe that studying the behavior and sociality of all living creatures on Earth, including these, is an important factor in thinking about peace of mind.
